Irish Republican Solidarity was founded in 2026 by Pádraig mac Aodha as a democratic socialist and hardline republican organization committed to the establishment of a united, sovereign and independent Irish Republic.
We were founded from a conviction that the republican objective proclaimed in 1916 has never been fulfilled and thus it is our responsibility to do our part in ensuring that it is fulfilled.
The Proclamation of the Irish Republic did not call for a permanently divided Ireland, limited self-government under another sovereign power, or a settlement in which the people of Ireland would remain divided between competing jurisdictions both domestic and foreign. It proclaimed the right of the Irish people to the ownership of Ireland, all 32 Counties, and declared that the Republic was to be established for the welfare and liberty of all its citizens.
That is the tradition from which Irish Republican Solidarity takes its name.
We do not regard republicanism as merely a matter of historical commemoration, to dress up in uniforms and parade around while the Six Counties are concurrently occupied. We regard it as a living political position, one that requires real action. Ireland remains partitioned, and therefore the republican project remains unfinished.
Our purpose is to organize around that belief while developing a modern political programme capable of addressing the economic and social conditions faced by people today.
We believe national liberation and social liberation belong together, as James Connolly so brilliantly stated. An independent Ireland should not simply replace one political establishment with another while leaving ordinary people struggling with poverty, unaffordable housing, insecure employment and inequality. The Republic we advocate must be a republic in substance as well as in name.
“If you remove the English Army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle., unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts will be in vain. England will still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.”
Our story
National sovereignty
We believe that Ireland is one nation and that sovereignty over Ireland belongs to the Irish people as a whole.
Partition divided the country into separate political jurisdictions and established institutions whose authority we do not regard as representing the sovereignty of the Irish nation.
Irish Republican Solidarity therefore rejects the permanent legitimacy of partition and supports the establishment of a single, independent Irish Republic encompassing the entire island.
We do not accept that Irish national self-determination can be permanently subordinated to the constitutional arrangements created by partition.
We do not legitimise Leinster House, Stormont or the English Parliament as sovereign authorities over the Irish nation as a whole.
Our objective is not simply a rearrangement of the existing institutions. It is the establishment of a genuinely sovereign Irish Republic.
Democratic Socialism
Irish Republican Solidarity is a democratic socialist organization.
We believe political independence without economic justice would leave much of the republican promise unfulfilled.
A republic should belong to its people economically as well as politically. Wealth and productive resources should serve society rather than being concentrated indefinitely in the hands of a small number of private interests.
We therefore support:
Public ownership of essential utilities and strategic industries.
Strong public services.
Universal access to healthcare.
Major investment in social and affordable housing.
Protection of workers' rights and collective bargaining.
Progressive taxation and redistribution of wealth.
Strong social security and support for people who need it.
Greater democratic control over the economy.
Protection of public assets from unnecessary privatization.
An economy directed toward the common good rather than solely toward private profit.
Our socialism is democratic. We believe economic power should ultimately be accountable to the people, just as political power should be.
Social Equality
The Republic proclaimed in 1916 promised to cherish all of its children equally.
We take that commitment seriously.
We reject discrimination based upon background, wealth, birthplace, ethnicity or social position. Irish republicanism cannot mean replacing one racial hierarchy with another.
We believe citizens should possess equal political rights and equal protection under the law, while recognising that genuine equality also requires tackling the economic circumstances that prevent people from exercising those rights meaningfully.
Our organization is open to people of different ethnic, religious and national backgrounds who sincerely support Irish self-determination and respect our principles.
You do not need Irish ancestry to support Irish unity.
Politics and Compromise
Irish Republican Solidarity respects the sacrifices made by generations of Irish republicans, but we do not believe historical figures are beyond criticism.
We distinguish between honouring those who fought for Irish independence and accepting every decision subsequently made by people associated with the republican movement.
We reject the political compromises made by figures and organisations when those compromises abandoned or subordinated the objective of an all-Ireland Republic.
Our criticism is directed at political decisions and their consequences rather than at personalities for their own sake.
Likewise, we do not present any existing political party as the exclusive representative of Irish republicanism.
Irish Republican Solidarity is independent of Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, the Labour Party, the Green Party and other established political parties.
We do not consider electoral success, participation in partitionist institutions or membership of a particular party sufficient evidence of commitment to the republican objective.
Where we agree with another organization, we will say so. Where we disagree, we will say that too.
